This device is essentially a sealed cabinet installed through a partition or wall, allowing materials to be tran-
sferred between different areas with varying levels of cleanliness without direct human intervention. The main
compartment of the pass-through box contains high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that can trap particles
as small as 0.3 microns, ensuring that air passing through the box is decontaminated.
The "electrical interlock" feature means that the doors on either side of the box do not open simultaneously,
which is a safety mechanism that maintains the integrity of both sides' environmental conditions. When one
door is opened, the other side automatically locks to prevent any unfiltered air from entering the clean area.
In operation, items are placed inside the box on one side, the door is closed and locked, and then the opposite
door can be opened to retrieve the items, all while maintaining the clean environment due to the HEPA filtration
and the interlocking system. This ensures a secure and contamination-free transfer of materials, which is parti-
cularly critical in pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor processing, and medical research facilities
among others.
